    Why Public Health?

Public health is a very worthy career path, as its focus is on the protecting and improving community health through:
    • Education

    • Research of disease and injury prevention
Public health professionals with an MPH degree help to improve the quality of life for millions of at-risk people. These professionals increase life expectancy, cut infant and child mortality rates, and reduce the spread of many communicable diseases.

How Public Health Has Prolonged Lives

The impact of strong public health practices in the last 100 years has been huge. Since 1900, the average lifespan has increased in America by a staggering 30 years. At least 25 of those 30 years can be attributed to public health efforts. Medical advances account for only about four years.

The most significant public health achievements in the last century have been:
    • Vaccinations
    • Motor vehicle safety
    • Safer workplaces
    • Family planning and contraception
    • Fluoridated drinking water
Some of the upcoming public health efforts in future years, where people with an MPH degree will play a large role, include:
    • More population-wide vaccinations in developing countries - rubella, measles, diphtheria, and tetanus. This will necessitate more public health workers in reproductive health, maternal health and health education.
    • More development of population-based prevention programs. This will lead to major health improvements in the next 10 years. As a result, many public health program managers will be needed.
    • Health service delivery systems will become more efficient and will lower costs. This will lead to more focus on disease prevention and health promotion. Many new public health jobs will be produced.
    • More public knowledge about how toxic wastes and pollutants affect community health. There will then be more focus on the health and safety of workers and communities. This will cause higher demand for public health experts in industrial hygiene and environmental health.
    Careers in Public Health

By 2016, there will be approximately two million new jobs in the health care industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that 12 of the 20 fastest-growing jobs are in public health. In particular, nurses with a public health background will be in the most demand.
